Spotlight On: Counsellor Sarah Mullen

Today we are starting a new series as we spotlight the people behind Weave Hawke’s Bay. These are our councillors, financial mentors, social workers, educators and programme deliverers. These are the people working hard to support whānau and communities across Hawke’s Bay, and today we begin with Counsellor Sarah Mullen.

Originally from Rotorua, Sarah first and foremost is a mum to three wonderful tamariki. She has now lived and worked in Hawke’s Bay for eight years and feels a deep connection to our community and the people within it.

Before moving into counselling, she spent 20 years working as a secondary school educator. Supporting rangatahi through those formative years strengthened her belief in the power of safe, consistent relationships and the impact of being truly seen and heard. That foundation continues to shape who she is as a counsellor today.

“I am deeply passionate about supporting people to reconnect with their strengths and to find their light again, especially in seasons where it may feel dimmed. I see counselling as a collaborative journey, one where we move at the client’s pace, grounded in respect, compassion, and genuine curiosity.”

Outside of work she loves films, books, travel, music, animals, and meaningful connections with others.

“At the heart of it all, I believe in the healing power of relationships, and it’s a privilege to do this work.”
